It is perfectly normal for a puppy to struggle as soon as they are introduced to a harness or a cap: these are new sensations on sensitive areas. The key is not firmness, but gradual progress and positive reinforcement.
Step 1: Unforced discovery
Place the accessory near their food bowl or bed for a few days, without putting it on them. The puppy must be able to sniff it and associate it with a familiar environment before any direct contact.
Step 2: Brief and positive contact
Present the accessory for a few seconds, accompanied by a treat or a game. Remove it before the puppy shows signs of discomfort: the goal is to end on a positive experience, not to force the duration.
Step 3: Gradually increase the duration
Once the first sessions are accepted calmly, gradually increase the wearing time, always associated with a pleasant activity (game, short walk, treat).
Special case: the carrier bag
Leave the bag open at home as a comfortable hiding place for several days before the first real trip. A puppy who perceives the bag as a safe space will travel much more calmly.
Mistakes to avoid
Forcing physically, scolding in case of refusal, or using the accessory only for stressful moments (vet visits only): these habits create a lasting negative association that is difficult to correct later.
