Dog cap: how to measure and choose the right size

A dog cap that is too small will chafe, while one that is too large will fly off at the first gust of wind. Before falling for a style, taking a few minutes to measure can save you from a lot of disappointment. Here is how to do it simply, without any specific equipment.

Why size is the #1 criterion for a dog cap

Unlike a coat, a cap rests on a sensitive area: the skull and the ears. A poor fit can create pressure points, cause the accessory to slide off during a walk, or worse, permanently discourage your dog from wearing it. The right size is also what allows the visor to actually protect the eyes from the sun instead of tilting to the side.

The 3-step measurement method

Use a soft measuring tape (sewing tape) or a piece of string that you can then measure with a ruler.

1. Head circumference — Pass the tape just behind the ears, at the widest point of the skull, leaving enough room for one finger.
